Meet the 2023-2024 Board

President & Editor-in-Chief: Anjana Sathy

Anjana Sathy, a law graduate from Gujarat National Law University, India serves as the current President and Editor-in-Chief of GroJIL. She has previously worked as a legal assistant to the Special Rapporteur on jus cogens and Chair of the United Nations International Law Commission in Geneva. She has also interned at the Supreme Court of India and was part of the team that presented testimony to the United States Trade Representative against the imposition of a retaliatory tariff on India’s Digital Service Tax. She currently works as a researcher with the Women’s Peace Network in Myanmar, carrying out their Human Rights Monitoring Project. As President, Anjana monitors and evaluates the progress, performance, and effectiveness of all initiatives that GroJIL undertakes, in line with the broader aims of the journal.

Managing Editor: Matleena Gurara

Matleena is an LL.M. Candidate at Leiden University, specializing in Public International Law. Matleena joined GroJIL in January 2022 as Copy Editor and now serves as Managing Editor. As Managing Editor, Matleena chairs the Editing Committee, which is responsible for the GroJIL’s biannual publications. She is ultimately responsible for the content of GroJIL. In her duties, Matleena determines the publishing guidelines while creating and enforcing the parameters and policies regarding all publications, taking quality and originality as the most important aspects.

Publishing Director: Luigi Sammartino 

Luigi (PhD, LL.M.) is a Research Fellow (Post-Doc) and Adjunct Professor in International Law at the University of Insubria (Como - Italy). Currently, he is the Publishing Director of GroJIL. Aside from determining the publishing guidelines, Luigi selects articles for publication, coordinates the editing process and conducts the final review of articles before publication. Luigi ensures that all articles are of an excellent level of quality.

Promotional Director: Liam Hornschild-Bear

Liam Hornschild-Bear is an International Business BSc student at the University of Groningen. Liam is interested in the intersection of natural language processing and Law. He was previously the director of a U.S.-based student publication and worked as a legal assistant for 3 years. Currently, he runs several websites in the EdTech sphere. As the Promotional Director of GroJIL, Liam is responsible for GroJIL's media presence, event organization, and growing GroJIL’s reach.

Executive Blog Editor: Pranav Agarwal

Pranav Agarwal is a fifth-year (international law hons.) student at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab. He is interested in Public International and Human Rights law. As the Executive Blog Editor, he is responsible for the smooth functioning of the GroJIL blog - International Law Under Construction.

Treasurer: Muhammad Ath Thariq

Muhammad graduated from the LL.B. International and European Law in 2021 and LL.M. International Commercial Law programme at the University of Groningen in 2022. As the Treasurer of GroJIL, he is responsible for managing financial affairs of GroJIL and supports the budget development as directed by the rest of the Editorial Board. While serving as the Treasurer of GroJIL, he is also working as the Senior Legal and Administrative Officer of a multinational company.

External Liaison: Nikolaj Taliga  

Nikolaj is a second year LLB student of International and European law at the University of Groningen from Slovakia. He is interested in Technology Law and accordingly follows the technology law track offered at the university of Groningen. Nikolaj gained his organizational and communication skills from his previous work experience as a guide and receptionist at an interactive exposition in Slovakia. As an External Liaison, Nikolaj is responsible for fostering and promoting communication as GroJIL's contact representative. Nikolaj seeks to establish beneficial and encouraging relationships with collaborators while establishing parameters for collaborative efforts, ultimately serving as a reliable contact point.
