Publishing Profile

The Groningen Journal of International Law is a peer-reviewed journal with a centralised focus on the paradigm of international law and its developments. We invite writers to focus on what the law could be or should be, and to apply their creativity in presenting solutions, models and theories that in their view would strengthen the role and effectiveness of international law, yet it may come to be defined. To this end, the Journal requires its authors to submit articles written in an exploratory and non-descriptive style.

The Groningen Journal of International Law is a peer-reviewed publication. Only submissions that fulfil the requirements of this guideline will be peer-reviewed. If a submission does not fulfil these conditions it will be rejected.

Submissions

All manuscripts should be submitted via email to board@grojil.eu.

Submission Guidelines

• All manuscripts must be submitted in a word document. Manuscripts in a pdf-file will not enter the peer review process;

• Manuscripts need to be between 7,000 to 15,000 words (excluding footnotes);

• Manuscripts may not have been published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere;

• Only articles in English can be considered for publication. The Journal has a general preference for ‘ise’ and ‘isation’ instead of ‘ize’ and ‘ization’ with the exception of quotations where the original spelling should be maintained. American authors may also submit articles that deviate from this policy;

• Every article should be accompanied by a short abstract of 200-400 words;

• A short bibliographical note, specifying the author’s current affiliation and e-mail address should be provided in the first footnote.

The Groningen Journal of International Law is a peer-reviewed journal. 

Citation style

The GroJIL uses OSCOLA style. Prospective authors may submit papers using this legal referencing style. The GroJIL editorial team provides the service of correcting the references.

Review Process

All submissions are read by the Publishing Director and Editor-in-Chief. Only those submissions that most likely fulfil the journal’s submission requirements will be sent to the peer reviewers. Submissions that do not fulfil the submission requirements will be rejected without any peer review. For example, if a submission-only includes 2,000 words, whereas the minimum requirement of words is 7,000 words, the submission will not enter the peer review process and shall be rejected. Each submission that is sent for formal review will undergo a double-blinded peer review. Reviewers will anonymously fill in a peer review form, make suggestions and comments in the submitted manuscript, and suggest ‘acceptance with minor revisions’, ‘acceptance with major revisions’ or ‘rejection’. The Editor-in-Chief and Publishing Director will make decisions accordingly within 4 months.

Open Access Policy

GroJIL provides immediate open access to all content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. Articles in this journal are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).

Copyright

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal."

GroJIL subjects all publications to an ‘Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivatives’ creative commons license, available here. As such, published material may not be used commercially or changed or altered in any way, and attribution must be given to the Groningen Journal of International Law when published material is downloaded or shared with others.
